Reproduction and development of the human body – Primary science research article #1

This is an article from Science (look on doc sharing link—there are two—the main article and one you will use for the subject data), one of the premier peer-reviewed journals that scientists strive to publish in. As a scientist if you can publish in this journal (or Nature or PNAS—two other premier journals), you have some stunning, amazing research. This journal covers all major areas of physical, life, and behavioral sciences, and expects the readers to be fellow scientists. YOU will get to read what many big scientists are reading. This article was publicized in the news so you may have heard of it. Since we just covered the endocrine system and touched upon evolution at the beginning of class, and will talk about it again in an upcoming learning unit, I thought you all would enjoy this article. This is the original article; the primary source, so once you read through this, be proud of yourself; you are reading and discussing science at the top level!

Strategy to summarizing the article:

Read the abstract first so you know the general idea of the research study.

Look at the points below that I expect for you to address in your summary, so I know that you read the article and not just the abstract.

YOU MUST SEE THAT YOUR TURNITIN.COM PERCENTAGE IS 5% OR LESS once you upload it into the dropbox to receive any credit.

Summarizing the actual scientific article:

Write between 4-6 pages, double- spaced (12 pt font, Times New Roman, 1 inch margins) summarizing of the article.

For each paragraph in your paper as outlined below, answer the questions I ask in COMPLETE sentences and in full, fluidly constructed paragraphs.

Paragraph 1: Introducing the research topic and the background studies. The information is contained in the first 4 paragraphs of the article.

Hints: At least include these points—you can tell me more….

a) Do some background research (i.e. look it up) on what oxytocin is and what it does (feel free to use your textbook and my lecture notes) and explain it in your introduction paragraph.

b) Discuss why the researchers decided to look at gaze and oxytocin (second paragraph in article)- talk about previous research that the authors discussed.

c) Discuss why the researchers decided to look at gaze between humans and their dogs specifically, and relate it to oxytocin? (third paragraph in the article)- talk about previous research that the authors discussed.

d) What was their hypothesis? (third and fourth paragraph in article).

**MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT QUOTE—SUMMARIZE USING YOUR OWN WORDS.**

Paragraph 2: How the research was conducted and assessed (methods)?

Hints: At least include these points—you can tell me more….

a) How many humans, dogs, and wolves were used in the study? You should state the numbers of each in experiments 1 and 2. You can get this from the supplementary materials article (this is the only part you need this article for so don’t print out but just read on computer) under participants (1st page for experiment 1, p6 for experiment 2).

b) STATE EXPLICTLY the independent variable (look it up in the textbook if you forgot what this is) for each experiment 1 and 2 (4th paragraph )

c) STATE EXPLICITLY the dependent variables (again, look it up in the textbook if you forgot what this is) of this study (4th paragraph)

d) What was the actual procedures in each experiment? (5th paragraph for experiment 1; 6th paragraph for experiment 2)

Paragraph 3: What the researchers found (the results)?

Hint: You need to summarize the results section starting from the 5th paragraph for experiment 1 and the 7th and 8th paragraph for experiment 2 —remember, the key words are SUMMARIZING—NOT using quotes to recopy exact phrases (this will earn you a zero grade as you are not following instructions), or just changing a few words here or there (otherwise it is plagiarism/ academic dishonesty that will be reported to the campus disciplinarian). Hint: the wolves are the control group—so for significant results, the dog results have to be different than the wolf results… (Also the last paragraph of the article summarizes the main results –check to see if you are right BUT THIS IS NOT ENOUGH DETAIL!!!! )

Paragraph 4: What the results mean to the researchers (very last paragraph)

Hints: At least include these points—you can tell me more….

How did the researchers interpret their findings?

Paragraph 5: Your conclusion

*** What are your thoughts on the study? Address what YOU thought of the article, anything you would change to improve the study. ALSO BE SPECIFIC ON WHAT YOU WOULD DO NEXT AS A CONTINUING or IMPROVED/ENHANCED EXPERIMENT AND WHY. I want to see real research design—what would you explore? NOT “I want to see further research in this area.” Don’t write that!
