Your research exercise can discuss the following:
1. What is your research question?
2. What is the methodology you are using to answer this question?
a. Here you need to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the method. In other words, you need to provide a mini literature review about your methodology (e.g. some info about what that method is all about)
b. You can also discuss why this method is the best one to answer your research question –justify the selection of this methodology.
3. What is your data?
a. What will you be examining? Be as specific as possible & justify the selection of your data.
b. How did you collect/ intend to collect this data?
4. Research: Analysis & Findings.
a. You can analyze a small sample of data here. For example, if you are doing DA, you can analyze a short article, or a section of a longer feature. If you intend to do interviews, you can include one interview. You do not have to include this same analysis in your dissertation but can treat it as a preliminary research, which will help you test your method/ data.
b. You can attach transcripts, actual articles, visuals analyzed etc. in the Appendix.
