Any of your choosing
Your term paper assignment is a literary research paper, one that selects one course text, raises a research question of interest to you, finds at least 2-3 scholarly sources that deal with that question, then produces a complex claim of its own through synthesis, analysis, and informed close reading.
Appropriate course work: As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.
Your paper should do the following:
-Make major/minor claims: Develop a larger argument and consider the smaller arguments that will help you get there.
-Make your claim complex: Your research question should not be easily answerable with a “yes” or “no;” it should not be merely descriptive or normative; it should demonstrate an ability to think on multiple levels and draw interesting connections, and should be narrowed from a broader initial topic.
-Provide context: What would an outside reader need to know to understand your argument? Define key terms, provide brief background on authors, etc.
-Summarize texts: To briefly provide the reader with a general understanding of an author’s argument and how it relates to your own points.
-Synthesize texts: To emphasize the relationship between various authors and how your argument fits into the conversation.
-Unpack evidence: Always guide your reader, in detail, through the passage or argument under scrutiny.
-Address other perspectives: In order to persuade your audience as well as develop a more nuanced, sophisticated stance.
-Provide stakes: Demonstrate why your argument matters.
