Please read the following article and then respond in writing to the thought questions provided
below. The grading rubric to be used in evaluating your responses to the assignment can be
found on the second page of this document. Please review it carefully prior to preparing and
submitting your response. Completed assignments must be submitted via the Assignment link
posted on Blackboard, no later than 11:59PM on Friday, February 6. The assignment is
worth 15 points (as detailed in the grading rubric). Word files (.doc or .docx) are preferred;
other formats may not be readable and if not, the paper will not be graded.
Assigned article:
Adolph, K., Kretch, K., & LoBue, V. (2014). Fear of heights in infants? Current Directions in
Psychological Science, 23(1), 60-66.
Length, formatting, and other specific instructions. Your paper should not exceed two (2) pages
in length, typed using double-spacing, in a font comparable to Times New Roman 12-pt. (that is
the font and font size used in this set of instructions). Within the two-page limit, you will write
responses to both the Part I and Part II questions below. You may use Part I and Part II as
headers for the two sections of your paper, but please do not re-type or re-state the questions
provided below. As a general guideline, your response in each section (Parts 1 and II) should be
one-page in length; it is acceptable, however, to deviate from this guideline as long as the
overall limit of 2 pages is observed.
Citations. It is not necessary that you cite the Adolph and colleagues article in the body of
your paper, or that you include a separate reference page for the Adolph paper. However, if
you use any additional sources of information or ideas, citations to these sources must be
included in the body of your paper and a full reference to your source(s) must be provided on a
separate reference page (this will not count toward your 2-page limit). Full references for any
additional sources should be comparable in format to the citation provided above for the
Adolph paper. Failure to provide citations to additional sources will result in an automatic 5-
point deduction (from Overall Writing Quality; see grading rubric categories).
Thought Questions:
Part I. In the assigned paper, Karen Adolph and her colleagues question whether human
infants are afraid of heights. In the first half of your paper, please comment on the types of
evidence (presented in previous research using the visual cliff apparatus) that led to claims that
infants do exhibit a fear of heights (if more than one type of evidence exists, your comments
should reflect this). Additionally, in light of Adolph’s arguments against fear of heights in
infancy, why do you think previous researchers so readily interpreted infants’ behavior in
visual cliff studies as a reflection of infants’ fear of heights?
Part 2. After arguing that infants do not fear heights (on the visual cliff and in other research
contexts), Adolph asks why infants do avoid a drop-off. Her answer involves the concept of
affordance. In the second half of your paper, based on a careful reading of the assigned paper,
explain the concept of affordance in your own words. Try to use examples from your own
experience to illustrate the concept.
