The Comedic Image
In his 1990 article, “The Rise and Fall of Animal Comedy,” William Paul analyzes a
series of comedies from the 1970s, such as Porky’s and Animal House, and dubs them
“Animal Comedies.” Your task in this essay is to read Paul’s essay, explain his concept
with a particular question in mind. Namely, to what extent can we describe contemporary
comedy (any instance made in the last ten years) as carrying on the tradition of “Animal
Comedy” as Paul describes the concept?
To do this, you will need to first describe and evaluate Paul’s argument. What does he
say? How does he say it? You will want to consider the extent to which the idea itself
strikes you as reasonable.
Second, you need to relate the concept or the failure of the concept to a contemporary
comedy of your own choosing. You will need to show, in this film, the ways in which the
film either conforms to Paul’s idea or departs from it. Having done so, you should also
consider what the presence or absence of “Animal Comedy” might imply about
contemporary social values.
The film that you choose must have been made or released anytime between 2002 and the
present.
The paper must be 6-7pages, double-spaced. You must use—and do so correctly—
Chicago style with endnotes. No outside sources, beyond the Paul essay, are needed.
