Case study of Caer Llan Deadwood management

Aim : – Should we or shouldn’t we use deadwood as a source of fuel without having a negative impact for biodiversity?

–          Comparative study between two different kind of woodlands

Objectives: 2 or 3 objectives

–          Evaluate quality deadwood on SSSI woodlands

–          Evaluate quality of deadwood in managed woodlands

Methods: (past tense, scientific language, continuous sentence) 200-300 words,

First two methods are for deadwood and the last two methods are for invertebrates identification

–          Small Deadwood collection : In managed woodland we took 4 different sites, on each side we’ve got 25 M point & 50 M point so its not just a random tree or for a scientific purpose, we went 15 M into the woods, find the nearest tree as a starting point. Then we used 1 M2 in 5 M belt transect, we collected the small deadwoods in every quadrats and weighed it. However in 3SI site slightly different method was used, instead of dong 25 M & 50 M point, we just choose one random tree that has clear area to avoid damaging the blue bells and stuff , the rest is the same as in managed woodland

–          500 M2 survey for large deadwood, we did a deadwood survey on 3 types of deadwood ( standing, suspended, fallen) , went in 50 M from our quadrat starting point and survey the trees 5 M for each side ( right and left), we measured all 3 types of deadwoods (length and diameter), for standing and suspended trees we estimated the height against the average canopy’s tree

–          Decomposed log turning: we took a picture before & while turning the log, measured length and diameter, catch the invertebrates underneath or inside the log

–          We set up pitfall trap sampling technique in Y shaped : choose the decomposed log,

We took GPS reading in every single point we did our methods

Introduction: -Why is it important?

–          From global issue (biodiversity, climate change, ecosystem services) to Caer Llan in south wales

–          Why deadwood management is an issue?

Focus: -Climate change and carbon management as an address (references)

– How much green house emission that would save with wood rather coal or fossil fuel to meeting UK green house regulation targets

-What is the best use of it? (place the calculation of deadwood turn the volume into ton)

Answer: – Both woodlands exceed that definitions therefore significant chance to use as a source of fuel without having a negative impact?

–          What sort of errors? Be factual: it would take very very long time, not all insects could be catch, why more methods used in managed woodland than SSSI , etc.

–          Explicit to use deadwood in SSSI

–          Take a reasonable amount source of fuel wood

–          We know more deadwood in manaed woodland than SSSI therefore more creatures in managed wiidlands

Can you also make a graph : X axis = – Number of species (and/or)

  • Number of individuals found

Y axis = – Sampling effort ( log turned or pitfall traps)

Would you use some SPSS to test some of the data between two different sites

Would you use science direct as a references as well please
