Final Case Study – The Ethical Entity

You are a junior employee of a major management-consulting firm. A large energy company intent on avoiding the ethical pitfalls recently evident with so many corporations has awarded your firm a consulting contract. One of the things your firm agreed to do is to provide a “best of class” analysis for your new client to review.

You have been asked to identify an organization that is ethically exemplary and provide a brief (5 page) ethical analysis supporting this thesis. You have latitude in that this organization may be either a for-profit corporation or a non-profit organization and it may be in any industry. The key is to provide a convincing argument for an organization that is “doing it right.” 

It is important that you distinguish between the mission of an organization and the ethics of an organization. A charity organization, for instance, may have an exemplary mission but may not be ethical in the way it operates. The organization you identify and promote with your argument must be ethical in operations as well as mission. The mission may be a supportive element, – – but it is not a sufficient element.

Specifically, you are to:

* Briefly identify and describe the organization. What does it do and how well does it do it? (industry, goals, objectives, profitability, competitive rank, etc.)
* Define ethics issues this entity faces and explain why the organization is “good.” What are the key ethical issues with which this organization deals and what actions and decisions are evidence of ethically exemplary conduct?
* Describe how the organization achieves and maintains a positive ethical position. What are the processes, polices, and organizational structures of this organization that support an ethical orientation? What is the organization’s worldview?
* Relate the organizational approach to traditional ethical theory or justice concepts. What traditional ethical approaches or concepts of justice does this corporation seem to embrace? Or not? What worldview? Give examples.
* Structure your paper as a persuasive argument. Start with a clear introduction and thesis statement. Provide supportive information logically and persuasively in the body of your paper. Conclude the paper with a concise statement of your supported position.

Have fun finding and discussing the “just right” organization. THIS MUST BE A REAL ORGANIZATION!
