Gertrude Stein

After reading Gertrude Stein’s short stories “Hands,” “Mother,” and “Adventure,” as well as her poem “The Gentle Lena” compare and contrast her work to that of T.S. Eliot. Consider particular stylistic changes that you note in making these comparisons and express in a 2–3-page close reading paper changes you note in one of the following: allusion; narration; simile and metaphor; gender.
Important: For Close Reading Essays, starting in Module 4, you will be required to write a minimum of 2-3 pages in which you demonstrate a “close reading” via specific quoted passages from the literature and your analysis of them.

You will use full MLA format and citation/Works Cited; I am posting a sample Close Reading Analysis paper below as a link.

Finally, each Close Reading paper will ask you to write about a very specific topic. For Module 4, that will entail writing about Anderson and Stein, comparing and contrasting the work of at least one of these authors with that of at least one of the authors from Module One. In a close reading paper, consider particular stylistic changes that you note in making these comparisons and express the changes you note in one of the following: allusion; narration; simile and metaphor; or gender.
The full prompt can be found in the Module 4 area and in the guidelines and rubric document for Close Reading papers, but don’t hesitate to ask questions if needed!  🙂

Again, these are true literary analysis essays, meaning that you will forward your analysis, support it with a “close reading” of actual “quoted passages from the text,” and explain how your evidence proves your point(s).

Here is the sample Literary Analysis paper in MLA style.  Please note both the mechanics of MLA (heading, headers, in-text citation, end Works Cited) and the STRUCTURE and DEVELOPMENT, which includes analysis and “quoted evidence.”  Be sure to emulate this approach in your Close Reading essays, and be sure to read the marginal notes in this sample essay as well.
