Requirements:
The presentation part of the assignment should be carried out in pairs, note a
maximum of two students.
This assignment is in two parts and is based on the Operational Requirements for the
University of Burton. The first part is a document and the second a presentation, the
marks will be split between the two parts.
NOTE: The report should be completed on an individual basis with no
collaboration.
Your Tasks:
Part 1:
Using the Operational Requirements for the University of Burton analyse the user
requirements and develop an appropriate design based on the recommended Cisco
hierarchical design model.
An individual report will contain the following content:
• A review of suitable backbone designs together with a critical analysis of them
and the reasons for your final choice of backbone design.
• A review of suitable communications links between the two sites together with
a critical analysis of them and the reasons for your final choice of
communications link.
• A critical analysis and detailed evaluation of the requirements with regard to
the distribution and access layers. A description of your solution with regard
to the distribution and access layers together with your reasons.
• A selection of suitable models of switches and make sure they meet the
requirements of each layer of a hierarchical network. You also need to make
sure there are enough switch ports for PCs and servers. The new network
needs to be scalable, available, secured, and manageable.
• A network design of that supports the new distance-learning program and
improves the performance of the existing network to support more efficient
operation, in response to the needs of globalisation and growth.
• Provide a drawing of your network diagram (Please using Visio and make sure
that the drawing has a proper title, notation and legends)
• An identification of suitable network components together with a set of
costings.
• Conclusions in which you briefly summarise the main results achieved from
your evaluations.
You will submit a well presented report of maximum of 6 PAGES (4-6 pages
preferred, double columned) with the IEEE format provided.

summarise the report in week and outline individual contributions. You will not only
receive summative feedback from tutors about the quality of your presentation but
also formative feedback to improve the quality of your work in the report which will
be submitted in week 12.
