Michel Foucault – Disciplinary Power, Society of Control and Biopower, Modernity and transion
Question:
On page 28 of the textbook, James Arvanitakis talks about power as “stuff” and power as “relational”. What do you think he means by that? Discuss this statement from him by considering the work of philosopher Michel Foucault referred to in the textbook and other sources.
My essay is to be set out as an argumentative essay please.
The question is based on page 28 of my class text book which is to be used as my 1st reference. I can link you to the google copy but I am unsure if you will be able to access it as you may have to purchase it, otherwise I can do some scanning and send you the pages of the 2 chapters on power and modernity which will help you.

This is the link for the text book we are using. Please use Chapter 3 on Power and Chapter 4 on Modernity, giving reference to page 28 where James Arvanitakis states “power as “stuff” and power as “relational”. Use this as your 1st reference please. If you can not access the book I will send you photo copies of relevant pages.
Also, this book will help out a lot and can be used as a 2nd reference:

I have consulted with my tutor and she has told me she would like my essay set out as:
Intro
Body
Para 1 – we had “stuff”
Para 2 – we went through modernity/transion
Para 3 – Now we have relational power which are:
– disciplinary power
– society of control
– biopower
Conclusion.
To be able to fully grasp the “stuff” and “relational power” concept you will need to read my text book and then I need it all related back to the wonderful Michel Foucault’s concept on Power.
This website may help you to understand some of Michel Foucault’s concepts however it is not to be used as a reference please as it is not academically peer reviewed:
