History
1. Describe some of the chief criticisms from the German delegation about the Allied proposed peace. According to the delegation, how does the proposed peace undermine and debilitate German territory, sovereignty, self-determination and its economy? What are some real fears the delegation expresses for the future of their country.
2. Assess the German delegation’s counterproposals. Do they attempt to reject the Allied demands completely, meet the half-way or accept them with some resignation as a thoroughly defeated power?
3. After reading George Clemenceau’s response, what is he suggesting by stating that Germany “utterly fail[ed] to understand the position which Germany stands?” How does Clemenceau use pre-war history and WWI events to argue Germany had crimes against humanity and violations of international law? Cite from Clemenceau’s examples.
4. The two sides have conflicting views over what constitutes a just treaty. Which side (the Allies or Germany) has the better justification to secure and enact its vision of peace? Who do you believe comes from a more forceful and compelling position? Clemenceau believes that the side that suffered the most should dictate the terms. How would the German delegation respond? What do you believe determines what vision should prevail? Although this is a subjective response, please use specific examples, wording and viewpoints from both documents to support your response.
