Sociology SURVEY RESEARCH PROJECT
Although some of the work on this project is done in groups, the final report will be an individual one.
Group Activity:
Topic: once you have decided on a topic as a group, you will need to create 10 questions to measure people’s attitudes about that topic (you MAY ask more, if you’d like). The questions must be worded so that the person answers either: agree, disagree, or no opinion. We are only asking people’s opinion on the topic, not whether they have experienced immigration, smoked marijuana, been on welfare, or are married to someone of a different race. WE ONLY WANT TO KNOW THE ATTITUDE ON A SPECIFIC TOPIC. Be clear and precise with your questions. I will be happy to review your questions or assist you in any way.
Individual Project:
Once you have decided on 10 questions, type your survey. You need to include in your questions:
What is your sex: male____ or female____
What is your age: _____
What is your race/ethnicity_______
Make at least 13 copies of your survey.
Hand the surveys to students on campus (let students know you are doing an assignment for a class and that it will only take a minute to complete). Try to get a diversity of people from different sex, race, ethnicity and age and from different areas on campus. Do not use friends or family members and make sure that all the surveys are completed (every question is answered).
Number your surveys 1-13
Summarize your findings: add up all the answers for each question to find a pattern.
Final Report: the following information will need to be included in your final report: (typed, double spaced)
First, in a brief paragraph, please tell me which topic you have been assigned (immigration, welfare) and what is your goal for your research. Tell me what it is you want to know, what is your focus?
Second, what was your experience handing out the surveys? Any problems or comments made by the students? How did you feel in your role as a researcher?
Third, what were your findings? (Example: 75% of the students I surveyed disagreed with question #3 that couples should live together before marriage, the other 25% had no opinion.)
Fourth, what were your conclusions? (Example: It seems that most LAMC students are not open to people living together which may mean that they are conservative in their thinking about personal issues. This leads me to believe that they may be religious as well.)
Final paragraph should include your overall opinion about this research project. Would you change anything about your research? (Your final report should be at least one page. The second page is a blank copy of your survey form used in the research and your completed data sheet (which you may alter to match your questions/statements).
Presentation
Every student will make a brief (2-3 minute) presentation to the class about the survey. What was your topic? What was your experience handing out the surveys? What were your conclusions? If you had to do anything differently, what would it be?
Format:
Essay must begin 1″ from top of your paper
Put Name, Class # (TTH 8:55, MW 10:35, etc.) top right of paper
The paper is to be a minimum of 1-2 pages, double spaced, typed. Remember to attach your data sheet, one copy of your survey, and the rubric to the back of your paper.
PAPER WILL BE TURNED IN TO ME IN CLASS ON DUE DATE. DO NOT SUBMIT ONLINE OR VIA EMAIL.

2) Please find and cite a California case that would impact this question. Please make sure to explain how the facts of the California case are similar to our case and how that case would affect our case.
There is no need to write an IRAC-style essay for this assignment. Each question above can be answered in 2-4 paragraphs and each answer should take less than one typed page, single spaced.
2. Shane and Molly lived together in Lansing, Michigan for 12 years. During that time, Shane and Molly had a joint bank account and put both their names on their car and the lease of their apartment. During this time, they referred to each other as “my wife” and “my husband” although they never formally married.
At the end of this period, Molly and Shane moved to Syracuse, New York. Unfortunately, three weeks later, Molly was hit by a truck and killed. Neither party had a Will.
Shane petitions the Surrogate’s court to be treated as Molly’s husband for purposes of dividing her estate and to be named Administrator of her estate. Molly’s family counters that they should receive all of Molly’s property (that was not jointly owned with Shane) since Molly and Shane were not married. Shane argues that they were “common law” spouses because of the way they lived together in Lansing.
Assume that Michigan does recognize common law marriages, while New York does not. Assume further that Shane and Molly’s common law marriage was valid under Michigan law.
The question is:
Must the New York Surrogate’s court recognize Shane and Molly’s common law marriage in Michigan, even though New York does not recognize common law marriage? Please make sure to back up your points with appropriate legal citations.
Please write an IRAC-style essay to answer this question.

Alex wants to parent the child. Elizabeth and her parents would prefer that the baby be adopted by a married couple because they would be mature enough to handle the responsibility of childrearing.
They live in the state of Washington. In constructing your answer please answer the following questions:

Rev. Code Wash. (ARCW) §§ 26.26.101, 26.26.116, 26.26.305, 26.26.505, 26.33.160, 26.33.190
1) What are Alex’s rights, if any, in this situation? Outline the steps Alex would go through in order to exercise his rights in this situation.
2) Contrast Alex’s rights with Elizabeth’s rights. In your conclusion, speculate what the likely outcome should be in this case. Be sure to cite relevant statutory law for each conclusion.

Liz comes to you for advice about what she should, or can, do.
Please read:

Based upon the holdings in these two cases, will Florida recognize Tom’s divorce as valid.
Please write an IRAC-style essay to answer this question. However, you need not find or use any case law other than those cases provided to you above.
5. Louisa and Jacques have been married for twenty-six years and live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They have four children, Marie (25), Matthew (20), Ellie (15) and Connor (12). Louisa has been a stay-at-home mom for most of their marriage while Jacques pursued his career in aerospace research. Only in the last three years has Louisa begun to work part-time at the local Friendly’s. Louisa and Jacques own the marital residence, which is now worth $350,000 and still has $31,850 remaining on the mortgage.
Their marriage has been on the rocks for some years now; Louisa suspects that Jacques is cheating on her, although she has no real proof. Jacques believes that Louisa doesn’t love him anymore. Ellie and Connor are aware of the tension in the family home. Matthew is a junior at LSU and only comes home on school breaks. Marie is in graduate school in Texas and rarely comes home.
Louisa wants a divorce and comes to consult with you about her options. She has the following questions:
a.Will she need to plead adultery in her Complaint?
b.Will she be able to obtain alimony or spousal support from Jacques?
c.Will she be able to remain in the family home? Who will pay the mortgage?
