Skim through the NYTimes.com Op/Ed page (linked in External Links)
find an article that interests you. Make sure the article is both argumentative and professionally written. Send a Copy of the link to the article to me for approval before the due date.
-Follow the Critical Reading and Argument Analysis guidelines (BB links and ppt.) and once you have read through the article (critically), write a two-four page critical argument analysis of the argument the author has presented in the article.
-Some ideas for aspects to focus on in your critical response (not an all inclusive list): effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the author’s argument–strength of focus, clarity of claim, use of evidence, title of piece (appropriate?), tone (appropriate for subject?), use of satire, strength of conclusion, assumptions of author–valid/invalid?, opposition?, rebuttal? etc. (Make sure to discuss the work in terms of the persuasive strategies logos, pathos and ethos.) For more help, please see readings in Course Materials on BB–also recall and use argumentation terminology from worksheets.
-Remember: Your response should be analytical in nature and not simply your take on the topic. In other words, you will critique the article and the author’s effectiveness in proving his/her claim. However, once you have looked at the article critically, you may choose to respond to the issue itself. I.E. How does the issue affect you? Your community? Society in general? (This issue response may function as your conclusion.)
Format: For this paper, please use MLA format–typed, double-spaced, one inch margins, times new roman font (12 pt.). For an example of MLA format, see Hacker guide or Purdue Website.
