STUDENT RESPONSE:
Disney has been looked into by the Center for Disease Control pretty recently. I got lucky this week for something to talk about, but at least eighty four itchy, coughing people with a confirmed case of the measles did not. Most of the news brings up the whole anti vaccination issue that has little to do with Disney. Donald Duck is most likely not going to be wearing a lab coat handing out flu shots anytime soon, but it can be used as an argument for employee health care, the theme parks get travelers from all over the world. Employees should get adequate care in case anyone is carrying something. Goofy is not going to be very entertaining to the kids when he has hypochondria and is hiding in the corner.

But let’s go back in time to before we had to worry about our eyes bleeding after hugging Tinkerbell. Before Walt Disney World was built, they picked out the land outside of Orlando and took some extreme measures to keep secrecy. “Seeking to avoid the escalation in prices and public scrutiny that would accompany public knowledge about Disney’s plans, it employed an array of people and devices, among them false identification documents, an assortment of newly created corporations lacking any name link to Disney, and an assortment of mostly uninformed real estate brokers.” (Buzbee, 2002, p. 1290) If you are trying to buy someone’s land and they see the name Disney, they might ask for more money than they originally would have. This seems a bit shady but since there were no real estate regulations against it, no problems and Florida got a substantial tourist destination.

“Political risk, a term rarely used by political scientists, denotes a bundle of expectations concerning potential future political events that have a market value and determine future earnings.” (Frynas, 2002, p 873) This is one reason we most likely will not see Disney North Korea anytime soon. Disney knows exactly where their markets are and plays that to their advantage. If movie and merchandise sales are especially high, it might be in their interest to focus more on that market.-Andrew N.
