INSTRUCTIONS:
You are asked to design an evaluation of the following hypothetical scenario. Use the Hoover text as well as the Research Methods Knowledge Base, drawing on the concepts of experimental designs, quasi-experimental designs, time series designs, non equivalent groups (you do not need to use ALL of these, but you do need to pick one and explain why you have made this choice).
‘Heartbreak fatal, researcher claims’ is the headline of a newspaper story that says that the stress from severe emotional trauma can lead to heart failure. The findings are based on a study of six heart patients who suffered symptoms such as fainting and irregular heartbeat but showed no evidence of heart defects or disease. All six, however, had experienced severe emotional trauma. This study also shows the episodes responded favorably to certain drugs such as beta blockers.
CRITIQUE THIS STUDY AND THEN:
A). design a correlational study to test the hypothesis that heartbreaks are fatal and
B). design a quasi-experimental or experimental study to test the hypothesis that beta blockers are effective.
