Art and Human Values

Art and Human Values
Certain works of art can cause social condemnation, approval, or even social upset. Yet under our criterion, everything human beings make is an & ;artifact& and therefore potentially a work of art. Why is it, in your thinking, that artworks that may offend public opinions attract condemnation and social outcry, when the existence of slums, polluted environments, and other artifactual constructs created by human beings, often go ignored or unattended.
What is it, in terms of its Intentionality, that makes art such a potent force in acting as a statement, whereas we seem often insensitive to other forms that human beings create as having the same power to excite public opinion?

Cite specific examples of artifacts that may make, in your opinion, a negative statement on human values, as well as specific examples of artworks that have excited public disturbance or condemnation.

Also consider how "modes of action" may be statements of human values, including actions as a performance of qualities such as "courage," "love," "sacrifice," or "cowardice."

How would you criticize human actions, or even official policies, from the aesthetic point of view of the values such qualities express, even if they are "indifference."
