The Palestinian-Israeli conflict has become one of the most spoken about international issue of our time. The United Nations involvement with these two parties began in part of the issue, the other aspect to this conflict is the United Nation’s role in the ongoing conflict. My paper will attempt to understand the United Nations role in the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict starting from the 1940s until today. It will touch on only the major successes and failures of the UN in its attempt to resolve this issue.
The paper will discuss the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, the UN’s involvement in the different Arab-Israeli wars, the issue of terrorism within the region, and a number of resolutions passed by the General Assembly and Security Council. This paper will assess whether the UN has successfully aided in deterring the escalation of violence within the region or has added to it instead. In addition this paper will assess how the United Nations has dealt with this conflict; has its role in the conflict been limited to resolution passing or has there been a more direct involvement on the part of the UN.
