Kolumba Museum by Peter Zumthor – a phenomenal break in architecture
Kolumba Museum by Peter Zumthor
Phenomenology in architecture is a postmodern concept and a topical dimension affecting the field of architects and relates to the influence of space
and materials on the senses. The role of ‘place’ in phenomenology refers to the complex collection and arrangement of the substance, shape, texture,
color and character of the building. All these collectively create the environment and phenomenology plays the role of bringing back historical
memories to the modern onlookers with an appeal to their senses (Holm, Palasmaa and Gomex, 2006). This is a subjective element where the subject
interacts with the place and the participants. The research problem of the study investigates the phenomenological aspects of Kolumba Museum and how
it makes a difference in the field of architecture. For the purpose of understanding the phenomenology in architecture the paper undertakes the study
of certain architectural creations of Cologne, Germany. Therefore the study undertakes a qualitative case study approach. It will also involve field
observation or primary research where the researcher will personally visit and study the details. The specific building chosen for the analysis is
Kolamba Museum which represents the ruins of a Gothic Church earlier destroyed by the bombing during the World War II in 1943 (Zarch, 2013). This
piece of his creation will be studied with respect to the floor plan, structures, colors and building materials and would be analysed to understand
the phenomenological appeal of architecture. Certain comparisons can be made with the architectures of Frank Gehry, Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid.
This will help understand the integrities of our theme of phenomenology, place and memory. During the 50s the destroyed pieces of the war were pulled
together into a memorial garden. In order to protect all such archeological ruins and also the old church Peter Zumthor , a Swiss Architect, who won
the competition in 1997 and initiated the rejuvenation of the old ruins of Europe. The approach towards the construction site could be described as
phenomenological which activates the memories and appeal to the senses. Zumthor is well known as “a shaman”, “a legend” and “the architect’s
architect”. He is “a phenomenologist, ‘concerned with the way things look, feel, touch, smell, sound’(Rose, 2007). His work reveals the same. Even
the non religious creations of the architect provide a spiritual enigma. The study of this museum shows how the architect dealt with the challenging
task of including the ruins and historical elements into the architectural beauty, creating a mystery with the thought evoking collaged walls and big
square windows – all of them gives the look of an art gallery. Zemthor in association with LACMA is also designing a revised design and the study
will provide some recommendations for the future incorporations. (Scott, 2014).
