Description: The abstract should be no more than 300 words. Your final paper topic can be on any theme related to the political economy of race, gender, or class. In
the past, students have written about the way class themes worked their way into poems in the early twentieth century, the effects of divorce on women’s
and men’s incomes, the effects of residential segregation on health and the environment, the changing educational attainment of Latino or Hispanic
immigrants over time, and many more. Motivation:Why do we care about the problem and the results? If the problem isn’t obviously “interesting” it might
be better to put motivation first; but if your work is incremental progress on a problem that is widely recognized as important, then it is probably better to 5
put the problem statement first to indicate which piece of the larger problem you are breaking off to work on. This section should include the importance
of your work, the difficulty of the area, and the impact it might have if successful. Problem statement:What problem are you trying to solve? What is the
scope of your work (a generalized approach, or for a specific situation)? Be careful not to use too much jargon. What is the main argument, thesis, or
claim? Methods/Approacthow did you go about solving or making progress on the problem? What kind of methods are you using (e.g. analyzing three
novels, income data for Latino immigrants from 1980 to 2000, using quantitative or qualitative research, etc.)? Conclusions:What are the implications of
your answer? Is it going to change the world (unlikely), disprove a common approach? Are your results general, potentially generalizable, or specific to a
particular case? Are there some important implications to the work (for example, that segregation is or is not key to racial income gaps). For the
annotated bibliography, write a brief summary and the reason why you want to use this source in your paper for each source you find.
