Order Description
In this assignment, you will write a set of instructions, test the instructions and revise, and also write a lab report that details this process.
Planning / Critical Thinking to start the Project
Project should take no more than 20 minutes for user to test. Think about directions which you wish you had and which are not easily available on the
internet (do not repeat something online) or frequently give orally to others which would be handy to have as a document you could use for a class,
project, club, or job
Do not use or copy instructions that are already available on the internet.
You may use images if you cite them. Cite photos you took yourself. Cite any information you use.
Banned topics include cooking recipes, tying a necktie, etc. as these are too simple. Also do not do anything dangerous, (including jump starting a
car battery.)
Writing Process:
Instructions:
1. Design a first draft of directions instruction sheet with text plus illustrations for a new user
o Design may be standard 8.5×11 page(s) open or folded, PPT slide(s), Webpage, (possibly published on wikihow or ehow) or 3-4 fold brochure (2 sided
8.5×11 or 8.5×14) well spaced on the page
o list of parts, tools, and/or equipment (especially if user has to already have on hand)
o warnings, cautions, and disclaimers
o at least 3 drawings, photographs, flow charts, graphs
2. Do 5 usability tests on your instructions.
3. Revise the final directions based on the usability report and format appropriately – PPT, brochure, broadside page
Lab Report:
Document the project from beginning to end in a formal lab report.
Sections:
Introduction: introduce your project, explaining your rationale, (that is, who is your audience, and why you picked the format)
Methodology: Document the 5 usability tests. What happened? Include users’ ability to follow the direction and list exact revisions to directions as
a result of their attempts.
Recommendations: Do you have recommendations for future testing? What changes would you make for a future version of the document?
