Goals
To assist you in analyzing how rhetorical situations influence a speaker?s choices
To assist you in summarizing the strategies speakers use to achieve specific purposes

Method
You will use an artifact from Vital Speeches published in 2013 or 2014.
You should have at least six (6) different entries on your ?Works Cited? page.
You should use at least five (5) rhetorical terms outside of the method (see list).
Attach or provide a website link to copy of speech.

Length
Your paper will be at least five (5) typed pages excluding the title and reference pages.
Note: ?at least? does not mean one sentence on page 5. It means one on page 6.

Structure
Your paper should cover three (3) broad areas.
I. The rhetorical situation
II. The strategies used by the speaker to accomplish his/her purpose
III. An evaluation of the speech. Did the speaker accomplish her/his purpose?

I. Research the Rhetorical Situation
What social, political, & environmental forces created the need for this message?
Who produced the message and what was their background?
Why did the speaker select this topic for this audience?
What was the stated and/or unstated purpose(s) of the message?
Who composed the audience and what were their feelings about the speech situation?
What constraints did the speaker face in the environment, topic, and audience?

Note: The order in covering the questions above is up to you, but it is good practice to conclude the overview of the rhetorical situation with a clear statement of what the speaker hoped to achieve with this speech. That helps lead into summarizing the speaker?s strategy and allows you to conclude your paper with an evaluation of the speaker?s efforts. You are going in the right direction if you can put the sentence: ?And this is what the speaker faced when he/she stepped onto the speaker?s platform,? as the last sentence of this section.
II. Analysis of Speaker Strategies
Arrangement (Disposition) ? How was the message constructed to achieve its goal(s)?
Was the speech designed to inform, persuade, inspire or entertain?
What organizational strategy was used?
Were the claims clear? What were they?
Did the speaker adapt the message to the attitudes and values of the audience?
Would the speech appeal to other audiences as well?

Invention
Ethos
What personal credibility did the speaker bring with him/her?
What credibility was created during the speech?
Logos
Were the evidence, reasoning and arguments valid?
What enthymemes did the speaker employ?
Did the speaker overlook strategies that could have been used?
Pathos
Did the speaker arouse emotional needs in the audience?
Did she/he provide a choice they could use to fulfill those needs?

Style
How did the speaker use language to shape the viewpoint of the audience?
What words and phrases would have captured their attention?
What metaphors or examples led the audience to accept certain values?
Did the specific words/phrases/metaphors/examples work?

Delivery
What do you know about the way the speech was presented?
Did reviewers comment on delivery? Do you have a video or audiotape?

III. Evaluation of the Speech ? Provide your reasoning to support your analysis
Why is this speech worthy of study?
Did the speaker use credibility appropriately?
Were the emotional appeals warranted and/or the enthymemes effective?
How did the style (flowery, comic, conversational, serious, etc.) impact message?
Was it clear to the audience what the speaker wanted them to do? Could/did they do it?
Was the speaker?s purpose(s) achieved?
Any unintended or larger consequences that went beyond the immediate audience?
