Discuss any political issues that have influenced the situation that is being studied.  How have these factors influenced the problem being written about or the

question(s) being asked?

Chapter 1.  An introduction to the Research Problem with a description of the problem or organization, its major functions, and the issue or problem to be addressed.

This should provide the rationale for the research project.  What do we want to know about?

Discuss the reason for conducting the study and what is expected to be found in the research.  For example, there may be anecdotal experience of the issue under study,

or knowledge of what the literature reveals may have led to interest in this research.  This section of the background should lead to the assumptions that will be made

regarding what might be found in the study.  Discuss any political issues that have influenced the situation that is being studied.  How have these factors influenced

the problem being written about or the question(s) being asked?

Chapter 2.  Review of the Research Literature looks at what others have done, how others have looked at this or a similar problem.  This section is fundamentally a

support section to justify this research as a worthwhile attempt and to provide the basis for developing the methodology.  What have others already found out about

this question and how did they gather and analyze data?

The research literature search may focus on the theory and practice of what is known about programs similar to the one that is being evaluated.  You must first define

the terms that you are using.  Those dimensions/ variables that are essential to determine whether the program being operated is a success, or the program being

proposed to solve an organizational problem will do so, must be clearly stated.

The research literature search may include a presentation of other research findings that addressed questions similar to the ones in this project. The review should

also discuss the strengths and weaknesses of various methodological approaches to answering these questions.

Chapter 3.  Methodology.   The techniques that will be used to gather data to complete your research.  How are you going to find and analyze information?

This section will describe exactly what steps will be taken to gather data to address the research questions.  State the essay question; the assumptions upon which it

is based; the methods that will be used to obtain data; the limitations of the study; and/or the criteria that will be used to evaluate the outcomes, findings, and/or

answers to the research question.  It is extremely helpful to find research literature that includes a set of criteria that identify those characteristics of

successful programs similar to the ones in the present study.

If internal documents are being reviewed, how will conflicting information be assessed? What documents have been chosen? Why were they chosen and not others?  If you

are assessing leadership qualities of a particular individual in an organization, how will you determine what type of leader this person is?  If you are conducting

interviews, you must provide both an interview schedule and a list of questions asked, and a description of how the interviews will be conducted.  It is not necessary

to identify interviewees by name but their rank and organizational affiliation, e.g. Director of Human Resources at a major hospital in New York City, should be

indicated.  If a survey will be sent out, describe how it will be distributed and include a copy of the questionnaire and how it will be pre-tested.  If existing data

will be used, how have you determined that these data are complete and correct?  Any limitations to these data must be indicated.

If any statistical tests or formal evaluation tools are being used, you must state that and indicate why they were chosen.  Levels of significance, if applicable, must

also be indicated.  Present the variables you have chosen, data you have collected that relate to those variables, sources of the data, and the methods of data

collection.
