Emerging Topics in Homeland Security
Research Paper ( 20% )
Each student will write an original research paper that
• researches and describes an emerging issue in homeland security;
• explains the drivers causing this emerging issue;
• analyzes how government and nongovernment actors have responded to this issue; and
• recommends policy actions to reduce these vulnerabilities.
Discussion papers will employ the same four heading structure listed above for discussion papers (description, explanation, analysis, and recommendations).

“Original” means that the paper is solely the student’s own work and does not utilize any part of a paper that the student has previously written.

Formatting Guidance: Research papers must be 5-6 double-spaced pages in length. They will use Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, and will have 1-inch margins. Cases will include a cover page and a bibliography, which do not count toward the 10-12 page limit.

Guidance Concerning Paper Content: Students must use a minimum of five references from scholarly journals, books, and reports/studies of governments, international organizations (IGOs), and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). No more than one of the five references can come from official websites. An official website is one whose address ends in .org or .gov. While it is acceptable to cite the course readings, they do not count toward the five reference minimum requirement.
