Topic: Relective Essay on Clinical Decision Making
References 5 years old or earlier
Topic suggestion Medication Error
Task Description:
This individual assessment item provides students with an opportunity to critically reflect on a clinical decision making case study. To do this you will identify a clinical scenario (case study) that you have been involved with. This case study must incorporate a problem or issue and include a decision making process.
1. Critically analyse this decision making process using the clinical reasoning cycle (Levett- Jones 2012). This means that you are expected to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the decision making process used in your chosen clinical scenario, using the clinical reasoning cycle. You are also required to incorporate recommendations for improvement based on current research and, if relevant, the National competency standards for the registered nurse.
2. Critically reflect on the decision making process. This means you need to reflect upon your experience of this situation and identify and discuss your reflections on the clinical decisions (you may use a reflection model to guide this process eg Gibbs). Because this essay requires you to critically reflect on a clinical decision you have been involved in the whole essay may be written in the first person. Your essay needs to clearly demonstrate a critically reflective and evaluative approach to practice, which means that you need to consider both the negative and positive aspects of your care and what aspects you would change for future practice.
Suggested Format for the assignment
Below is a suggested format to assist you in developing your assignment, but please feel free to structure it in whatever way you believe addresses the assignment requirements.
Introduction
Explain briefly the context; state aim of the essay; and very briefly introduce your overall argument (a very brief summary of major issues and recommendations).
Background
Provide relevant background information about the patient and the situation, including the pathophysiology and psychosocial aspects. Identify and describe the clinical decision and the main issue or problem within the context of nursing practice and health care delivery. Explain why this issue or problem is important. Support this information with current Australian and International research.
Clinical reasoning
Use the clinical reasoning cycle to critically explore the clinical decision you have been involved in (this process will be explored and discussed in the tutorials). For example, you may consider in this section:
• An explanation of how the decision occurred and what the influencing factors were. Impact on patient care, nursing standards, nursing practice, policies and procedures. Support your information with current research of best practice and decision-making processes. Link the clinical decision making case study to the National competency standards for the registered nurse if relevant or applicable.
• An exploration of the main problem or issue in the case study. Evaluate the effectiveness of actions and explore errors that may have occurred. These errors or assumptions may have influenced the clinical decision and it is important you identify them and explore them.
Reflective practice and Recommendations
• Critically reflect on the clinical decision making process. Reflect upon your experience of this situation and identify and discuss your reflections.
• Include recommendations, that is, a course of action that could have been followed to overcome problems identified. This may also include future professional development for you or nurses generally.
Conclusion
Summarise the key points made in the essay, and restate your overall recommendations.
