Response Paper

Please w rite a critical response to one of your course rea d ings. The resp onse could be to a

reading
in the text, that is related to your class presentation topic , or it could be to one of the
read i ngs you have done up to September 30.

In the response paper, please summarize the reading that you have selected, and analyze or
critically explore the ideas further. Articulate your own ideas and clarify what your own position

is
(for exam ple, where you agree o r disagree with the author, or where you think further clarification

is
helpful). In o rder to situate yourself, you may find it useful to refer to texts or works that

form a
relevant context for the re a di ng you are di scussi ng.

I expect you to do some more researc h on the subject. Please consult at least two other s ources

in
addition   to   the   reading   that   you   have   selected.   These   could   be   articles   that   explore   the   topic   from
another   angle,   that    offer    an   opposing    argument,   or    somehow    complement   your    critical    response.    For
example,    if    you    chose   to    discuss    the    excerpt   fr o m   Sandra    Steingraber’s   book,   Raising    Elijah,   you
might   also   refer    to    Rachel    Carson’s   work   Silent   Spring    (which    has   been   an   important   influence    on
Steingraber),   or    to    the    film    Living   Downstream    (about    Steingraber),   or    to    a   book   such    as    Slow    Death
by   Rubber   Duck ,   which   also   explores   the   effects   of   toxins   and   pollution   on   human   bodies.

Some   questions   to   conside r   are   as   follows:
– What   was   the   main   focus   of   the   reading ?
– How   would   you   describe   it s   tone   and   style?
– What   are   some   specific    phrases   and   examples   from   t he   reading   that   support   your   general
interpretation   of   it ?
– What   are   the   st rengths   and/or   weaknesses   of   the   reading ?
– Does   it    open   further   questions   or   lines   of   exploration   for   you?   If   so,   what   are   they?
