According to Vacca (2004), an alternative to incarceration for offenders who suffer from an obsession or addiction is described as a treatment-based court. These courts are divided into many programs that incorporate alcohol and other drug therapy services, while upholding the judicial system and its case procedures. The programs use a non- confrontational approach to treatment and endorse public safety, while upholding the criminal justice system. The programs aim at reducing recidivism and drug abuse among the participants, after they are released from the legal system (MacKenzie 2008). They may also work as pre- arbitration models where criminals are proposed access into drug rehabilitation programs, with an arrangement that the allegations against the participants be decreased or discharged upon successful completion (Vacca, 2004).
These programs are developed with an aim of reducing crimes that are predominately committed because of drug abuse (MacKenzie 2008). Within the programs, people are offered training based on their skills, with the aim of making them significant members within the community. Through the education offered in these programs, people change their habits and develop positive coping skills (MacKenzie 2008). Individuals who undergo proper training in the programs are less likely to get themselves involved in future criminal activities. While those who do not get the rehabilitation, by entering the programs, usually end up going back to prison because of committing new crimes or violating court sanctions (Vacca, 2004).
Despite the development of these programs, in most court jurisdictions, there is still limited research conducted on the effectiveness of the programs (Vacca, 2004). It is typically very problematic to determine the effectiveness of these programs because of the different judicial procedures used in most of the programs (Vacca, 2004). It’s also very difficult to determine the factors that affect the programs within the rehabilitation centers (Vacca, 2004). This study will test the hypothesis, Treatment-based drug courts significantly reduce criminal recidivism rates.
Participants in these programs are given counseling services, educational training services, and the proper sanctions and rewards, that help them change their additive behaviors (MacKenzie 2008). The researcher will conduct a meta-analysis of several peer-reviewed studies that cover the importance of an association between the studies variables (Vacca, 2004). This method is the most suitable because they can be used to describe the efforts made by the participants under investigation. This level of significance, and adaptability, can offer a chance to discover and recognize potential controlling variables (MacKenzie 2008).
Sampling procedures used in this method can be slightly biased and can lead to poor results. The entire research process involves conducting a literature review on studies related to the thesis topic, developing an annotated bibliography, collecting data from participants and peer-reviewed studies, and conducting an analysis of the data, in relation to the research objectives. To avoid sampling biasness, the researcher will explore and analyze all challenges to the hypothesis. After the completion and organization of the researchers findings, the researcher will either reject or accept the hypothesis stated. A thorough explanation of the later will be conducted.

Ameen, Jennifer, and Meghan discovered in their study that there is a need to develop evidence-based reports to evaluate training programs within the prisons. This study meant to assess and improve these programs. They created a syllabus to be used in rehabilitation centers that assist in provision of suitable education for the inmates. Findings in this study will assist the researcher in developing the literature review section.

This policy paper conducted a review of five hundred and seventy one research studies conducted on Treatment-based drug courts. The researchers concluded in the study that within these correctional programs general education is usually provided which in turn reduced crime by seven percent. They also discovered that the participants benefited from taxpayers money and reduced rates of crime within the society. This study is important because the researcher will use information reviewed to develop a general background of the study under investigation.

Brewster and Sharp conducted a study of imprisoned people in Oklahoma to determine if rehabilitation reduced the rates of crime among the court participants. They concluded in the study that completion of a treatment-based drug court program is significantly related to an increased endurance period, which means the time between when one is released from prison and then re-incarcerated for both female and male criminals. These authors discovered in their study that, of the 11,800 prisoners in the report, approximately 48.7% got in custody without any education from high school. The researchers also outline that the low proportion of qualified inmates was approximately 18.2% who actually benefited from the program while in prison. Based on the results, Treatment-based drug court programs provided in correctional centers, were highly recommended to all criminals and inspiring more criminals to participate.
Burke, L. O., & Vivian, J. E. (2001). The effect of college programming on recidivism rates at the Hampton County House of Correction: A 5-year study. Journal of Correctional Education, 52(4): 160-162.
Burke and Vivian conducted an analysis of people convicted for six-years’ and participated in college-level education that was provided within an institution in Massachusetts. They discovered that prisoners who finished their college education, while in prison, were 21.9 percent less likely to conduct criminal activities after their discharge, than those who had no college education in prison. This report will assist the researcher in explaining the correlation between life skills and educational programs and recidivism.
