ASSESSMENT 2: Annotated bibiography
Due Date 1 October
Length 2000 words maximum
Topic Linking child development research with policy and practice
The purpose of the assessment is to locate relevant journal articles in one area of child development, extract the key findings from the articles, and relate them to
implications for professionals working with young children and their families and implications for social policy makers.
Locate five research articles published in the last five years (2009 – 2013) and not included in the unit outline that report on research conducted into one of the
following areas:
• Child abuse and neglect
• Culture and child development
• Risk-taking and child development
1. For each of the five articles, provide an overview of the methods used and extract the main points (findings/conclusions) that are important for the work of
early childhood educators and other practitioners working with young children. The following details should be included:
a) The main aims of the research (Why did the researchers conduct the research?)
b) The participants (Who was involved in the research? – including any significant characteristics, such as age and socioeconomic status)
c) The main research methods, including research design (e.g. longitudinal design) and measures (e.g. questionnaires, observation)
d) The main research findings (What did the researchers conclude?)
e) Limitations of the research reported by the researchers
f) Your own critical analysis of the research as reported in the article.
2. Discuss the implications from the findings for practitioners working with young children and their families.
3. Discuss the implications from the findings for policy makers concerned with the welfare of young children
Hints for locating relevant articles in your chosen area:
