ED PSY 6545, Consultation in Schools and Related Settings

Multicultural Case Study

Ms. Butler is an African-American, middle-class, school psychologist, who has worked in an urban school district for ten years. She consults with teachers in her

school and is a member of the school intervention team. Mr. Gordon is a fifth-grade teacher who recently moved to this urban school after working in a suburban

district for eight years. Mr. Gordon was born and raised in a White, middle class, suburban setting, and so the urban setting is a new experience for him. Their school

serves a racially and ethnically diverse group of students from middle- and low-income families.

Mr. Gordon asks Ms. Butler to consult with him about Kuldeep, an 11-year-old boy in Mr. Gordon’s room. Kuldeep lives with his mom, dad, and younger brother.

Kuldeep’s family is originally from India, and they have lived in America for about two years. This is Kuldeep’s second year at the school.

Mr. Gordon is very concerned about Kuldeep’s performance in school. Although Kuldeep will sometimes participate in class, he often appears unaware of what is

happening and spends time staring out the window. Kuldeep has completed only one written assignment during the first two weeks of school, but five assignments

have been due. Lastly, Kuldeep usually wanders around the playground on his own during recess and lunch breaks. He doesn’t seem to have many friends.

Mr. Gordon has heard that Kuldeep’s parents have been reluctant to talk with teachers in the past. According to other teachers, the parents were very leery and

unwelcoming during last year’s parent-teacher meetings. Mr. Gordon has never worked with a family from India, and he admits that he’s a little anxious and not sure

how to proceed with helping Kuldeep, especially in talking with his parents. Mr. Gordon hopes consulting with Ms. Butler will give him some ideas on how to make

contact with Kulheep’s parents and begin a conversation about their son’s work at school.

Please answer the following questions:

1.    The first component of Ingraham’s (2000) framework for multicultural school consultation is to identify the domains for consultant learning and

development.  Based on the information in this case study, select one domain from the list below that appears to be important for the consultant (Ms. Butler).

Explain why.

•    Understanding one’s own culture
•    Understanding the impact of one’s own culture on others
•    Understanding individual differences with cultural groups and multiple cultural identities
•    Understanding cultural saliency (individual, group, universal)

2.    If you (not Ms. Butler) were the consultant in this scenario, identify one domain (from those listed above) would you need to be attentive to in order to

work effectively with Mr. Gordon. Explain why this domain would be of importance for you.
