essential attributes
Some suggestions for beginning:
§ Create a list of the essential attributes of your genre you’ve discovered during Assignment 2.
§ Choose two of those attributes you think you could use in your own writing.
§ Play around with writing using one of the attributes, knowing that no one will see this draft.
§ Look back at what you’ve written. Did you include the attribute? Can you explain clearly how you included it? Repeat this exercise for the other attribute.
Some suggestions for revising:
§ Revise your example to include an opening: something that orients your reader and provides the information necessary for them to understand your work.
§ Revise your example to end with a complete thought. Have you fully explained the last idea you presented? Make sure you’re not ending in the middle of a thought.
§ On a separate sheet of paper, list the main topics you address in your example. These should be topics that exemplify some sort of essential attribute in your genre. For example, if you’re writing a personal statement, one of your essential attributes might be your inclusion of personal anecdotes.
§ If your list includes more than one topic, write out the relationships between those topics. This will help you think about how the sections of your example fit together.
