In this assignment, you will select a research topic for your course project. The topic proposal should include a description of the topic, identify some resources that you intend to use, and summarize your preliminary research. This assignment will lay the groundwork for your project.

Complete the following:

Step 1: Choose and Refine Your Research Topic
Select a research topic.
Describe the topic and why it is important.
Briefly outline how each of the relevant theories presented in the course would interpret or evaluate this issue, using appropriate sociological language and concepts.
Refine or modify your research topic, based on feedback from your instructor and peers in the u05d3 discussion.
Step 2: Identify and Briefly Summarize Preliminary Supporting Resources
In any research paper, it is necessary to provide the context of the field in which you are conducting the research. In the topic proposal for your project, you will summarize what existing sociological literature has to say about the topic you have chosen. Thus, you will need to conduct a small-scale literature review to prepare for your project.

You must include a minimum of four resources that are relevant to your topic in your topic proposal:

At least three of these resources must be from credible, scholarly sources, such as an academic journal. (The Capella library is good place to start your search.)
You may use some resources from the literature provided in this course, but at least one of your three scholarly resources must be from research you have conducted independently.
At least one of your three scholarly resources should provide statistical data.
Include at least one relevant article from the popular media. This can come from any reputable source (including newspapers). This should be a recent article that explicitly addresses the same pertinent aspect of your chosen topic that your research sources address.
Summarize the resources you have chosen, within the context of the problem. Justify the necessity and value of your research question, based on the existing sociological literature. You must demonstrate that the articles you have chosen are relevant to your specific topic.
