a. In your answering of this question, you must do the following:
i. Find original quotes from Martin Luther King, Jr. that is representative of both ideological positions.
ii. Articulate which ideology King most adhered to. (HINT: This is a bit of a trick question.)

2. Answer the following about the film Selma shown in class.
• Why were the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) leaders and other young activists antagonistic to King? Does

this represent a tension between their philosophical approaches to civil rights work?
• What role did black women play in the movement as depicted by the film? Were they marginalized, placed in leadership roles,

or something between those two extremes? Why do you think history does not mention black women much beyond Rosa Parks?
• Malcolm X has a small cameo in the film. What does he suggest could be his role in the march? How does MLK respond to this

suggestion? What does this suggest about their philosophical differences?
• President Lyndon B. Johnson is portrayed as being hesitant to sign the voting rights act because there were other issues

that he felt were more important. Research the controversy about the film surrounding this issue; do you think the portrayal was

fair?
