Book Reviews
An academic book review has at least three primary components:
1. A concise summary of the author’s primary argument
– Identify the author and present the work clearly, succinctly and without bias
2. An analysis of the evidence and sources supporting that argument
– For example, what were the primary sources used? Secondary sources?
3. A critical review of the work’s strengths and weaknesses
– Is the work convincing? Potential counter-arguments, limitations or gaps?
Other aspects of a good review include:
1. A discussion of the work’s place within the larger literature or comparisons to similar or competing texts. One way to do this is to connect the reviewed work with class texts and materials to
provide context, support or counter-analysis.
2. An example of authorial style. The reader of your review should get a sense of the author’s writing style, intended audience and academic level.
Finally, your book review needs to be 2-3 pages and single-spaced. Please title the review with the complete citation for the work, i.e.:
John Smith. I Cannot Stand Jamestown. New Amsterdam: Colonial American
Press, 1611.
