My Story: The Aztec Predict The Coming Of The Spanish, Chapter One
A: The account from the old man tells of prophecy given to him in a dream about the Spaniards coming to Mexico. Considering the amount of details the old man got right (horses, white men, large ships) without ever seeing any of these things It’s difficult to make a case for this accounts legitimacy. Not to mention it came from a dream, where details are usually nonsensical and no one can witness it to deem it true or false besides the person sleeping. Later in the text it is mention the accounts surfaced after the Aztecs defeat. It would be easier to argue that either the european historian or an Aztec person under spanish colonization made up the story than calling the initial account true. There is no logical sequence or benefit to using this account as historical evidence. However, this source does show how prevalent prophecy and mysticism is in Aztec society. Prophecies and omens were not seen as just hoopla conjured up by commoners but as something taken seriously by leaders and important figures. Later in the text it says that Moctezuma, the Aztec Emperor was troubled by the sightings of comets, water spouts and unexplainable burning of temples and saw these events as a sign of bad things to come. However, it is mentioned that the sightings were recorded after the Aztec empire fell, which can once more lead the door open to speculate if these sightings even occurred.
