Live Performance Review
Project description
Role: Imagine you are an arts reporter for the online section of a local news outlet (ex. News and Record, Yes Weekly). This should help you think about your audience as well as the voice you choose to use as you write.
Audience: Imagine your readers are residents of Greensboro/Triad (or wherever you attend the performance) with knowledge about music and jazz, but not the group you hear and/or possibly not the venue you attend
Format: Essay/article
Task: Your assignment is to attend a live jazz performance and compose an article to be published on the newspaper’s online arts page. Your article should be a positive review and should include the following:
date and time
venue – where – describe the scene
audience – who is in attendance
group – instrumentation, arrangement/setup/location in venue, names of the musicians or group name
performance – break down at least four tunes and include:
song title if possible
style and tempo
arrangement of melody chorus and overall tune
solos – description of each
possibly compare/contrast soloists’ styles
Remember, your goal is to describe the music in a way that puts the sound in the reader’s ear and makes them want to come out and hear the next performance.
Details: 3 full page minimum, 12 pt font, 1 inch margins
Reminder that song titles go in caps and quotations: “All the Things You Are”
