Geographies of Industry
Unprecedented growth in the cotton, iron, and coal industries during the decades surrounding 1800, culminating in the steam-powered factory system, powered a self-sustaining “take-off’ in the British economy. The cotton industry provided the paradigm, experiencing a spate of output-boosting inventions in spinning and weaving that made the inventors Hargreaves, Arkwright, Crompton, and Cartwright famous (and Arkwright, at least, vastly wealthy). These inventions required factory-scale application, so the argument went, and factories required James Watts’ steam engines. Increases in iron and coal output, for steam engines and cotton factories, made the factory synthesis into a juggernaut that changed the world. (T.J.Misa, 2010, p.81)
Chapter 4
Instruments of Empire
BRITISH TECHNOLOGY, propelled forward by the industrial revolution, had reached something of a plateau by the mid-nineteenth century. The display of Britain’s mechanical marvels at London’s Crystal Palace exposition in 1851 stirred
The patriotic imagination, but now British industry faced a long march to stay abreast of rising competitors in Europe and North America. (And it was Germany and the United States that would spearhead a “second” industrial revolution in the decades to come.) At midcentury in Britain, and soon across much of the industrialized world, a new technological era took shape as colonial powers addressed the unparalleled problems of far-flung overseas empires. To a striking extent, inventors, engineers, traders, financiers, and government officials turned their attentions from blast furnaces and textile factories at home to steamships, telegraphs, and railway lines for the colonies. Imperialism altered these technologies, even as these technologies made possible the dramatic expansion of Western political and economic influence around the globe. (T. J. Misa, 2010, str.117)
