Creating bicycle lanes

Creating bicycle lanes
Proposal arguments identify a problem and offer a solution
Review Faigley pages 188-189 Steps to Writing a Proposal Argument
Pages 78-91 Hacker identifies Constructing Reasonable Arguments and explains the focus of this particular argument in which you take a stand on a debatable issue and propose a solution.

Your assignment for this major research argument is to develop a proposal claim and argue a claim stating we should or should not do something.
Ideas: Creating bicycle lanes to make cycling safer and to reduce traffic.
Building a pedestrian overpass over a busy street to improve safety for walkers.
Redesigning the process of registering for courses, getting email, or making appointments to be
more efficient.
A Colorado State Law should be enacted requiring helmet laws when using motorcycles.

Example: Thus, Introduction ? gain attention, identify the problem, present your proposal claim (should or should not)
Body ? propose your solution; make clear the goals of your solution; describe in detail the steps in implementing your solution; explain the positive consequences that will follow from your proposal; argue the feasibility of your solution. Consider other solutions and why your solution is the best choice.
Conclusion ? issue a call to action; restate proposal claim; summarize

This is a four to six page essay with a works cited page (MLA style documentation required). At least five sources with one in-text citation from each source included within the text of the essay are required (at least five in-text citations).

An outline needs to be included within the essay; refer to pages 12-14 Hacker for information about your outline. The outline needs only to have the thesis statement in complete sentence and main arguments stated with key words
Ie. Thesis:
I. Main argument
II. Main argument
III. Etc.

Requirements for Organization: Outline ? then the Essay ? lastly the Works Cited page

Choose a topic you feel very strongly about — write with passion and conviction as you present your proposal claim. Your opinions/views are a portion of this essay, but you also must include evidence (ie. statistics, expert quotations, etc.) in support of your position. This is the research needed to support your proposal claim.

Submit via D2L email or Dropbox.

You will submit the proposal argument once for a score and then revise and resubmit the same proposal argument as your final argument at the end of our session (final essay). Both are scored individually using the evaluation/assessment rubric.

Proposal Argument ? submission due the earlier date
Final Proposal Argument ? submission due the later date as your revised and edited
submission; hopefully much learned from the previous submission
This particular argument allows you the opportunity to submit an essay and revise
and resubmit later. Both scores are kept, however.
