Definition of Persuasion: The process of creating, reinforcing or changing people’ beliefs or actions. (This will be different from informative speaking because your opinion should be very clear. You are telling us your opinion on a topic and trying to get us to agree with you and do something about it!)

Types of Persuasive Speeches:

Propositions of Facts: These seek to persuade the audience to accept the speaker’s view on the facts of a particular issue.
•   Who killed JFK?
•   The world is flat
•   Men are from Mars women from Venus
•   Are vitamin pills necessary?
•   Criminal tendencies are genetic?
•   Are the elderly overmedicated?
•   Acupuncture is the best cure to aches and pains
•   Lance Armstrong is the world’s best athlete
•   Big foot exists
•   Kirk Cobane did not commit suicide

Propositions of Values: In a proposition of values, you make a statement where you are asking your audience to make an evaluative judgment as to whether the statement is morally good or bad, right or wrong. This may be done by comparing two items and asking them which is better.
•   Multicultural education is better than traditional curricula
•   Women, children and the elderly receive unequal protection in court
•   Generic drugs are better than name brand
•   Should we have designer babies
•   Everyone should eat bugs instead of meat
•   We should all talk to a physiologist
•   Buy locally grown and from locally owned stores
•   objects can be our best friends
•   Studying abroad provides better education
•   Laughter is beneficial to your physical health.
•   Casinos are detrimental to communities they are in
•   Private schools are better than public
•   Small town communities are the best places to live.
•   The new york Yankees are good for baseball
•   Can restaurants refuse to serve alcohol to pregnant customers?
•   Everyone should sign a pre-nuptial agreement
•   Should not save premature babies
•   Should not circumcise boys right after birth

Questions of Policy: A proportion of policy advocates a course of action. In this, you ask your audience to endorse a policy or to commit themselves to a particular action.
•   Alcohol should be banned at all sporting events
•   Should fast food restaurants be held responsible for their customers obesity?
•   The penny is a costly and irrelevant form of currency that should be eliminated
•   We should all adopt grandparents
•   Couples should limit their families to one child per household
•   Animal acts in circuses should be banned
•   High schools should make volunteerism a requirement for graduation
•   Have to get vaccines before entering school?
•   Should teach sex ed classes in high school- not abstinence only
•   Left handed desks
•   Take a dance class before graduating
•   High school exit exams
•   Implant GPS chips into people
•   Couples should have to take parenting classes before having children
•   Divorce laws should be stricter and harder to get.
