What were the conditions like for African Americans in 1968? How had their demands for equality become more radicalized? Who were some of the leading figures of the more radical black power movement?
How did the black power movement become intertwined with sports on the college campus?
What were the demands made by the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) so that black athletes would lift their boycott against the Olympics?
Who were some of their white allies that wanted to make sure that African Americans would be included fairly? Particularly the Harvard rowing team.
After winning the medals Tommie Smith and John Carlos made a very strong statement. What was this statement? What were the symbols attached to their demonstration? What about the subsequent medalists and their protests?
Do you think that sports can be political? Do you think the case of Tommie Smith and John Carlos and the other athletes proved that sports can be political? Are sports still political today?

Read about Peter Norman http://griotmag.com/en/white-man-in-that-photo/. He was the white man that also won a medal and stood in solidarity with Tommie and John. Why do you think he has been lost to history? Does he deserve a mention in US history even though he was Australian and white?
