Introduction: This discussion will use two films, Rosetta and Hidden to show the social differences in French. Although Hidden also involve ethnic difference, but this discussion will mainly focus on the aspect of social class difference.
Boarder summary: Apply the theory of Pierre Bourdieu, how space imply as the power of one person, of how many land/house you own equal to you position in society, and use the power of space and cinematic element to emphasis the social class difference. Apply the concept of his ‘site effect’ article from the book Weight of the World, no need to use his example of New York or American, only reference to his concept. Both films show the conflict of social class differences in France through the concept of space, and aim to target to the bourgeois middle class, challenge their perspective. Engage how this concept and theory apply to through the cinematic element, especially focus on the journey and obstacles of characters to bring out the conflict between working class and middle class.
Section 1: In Rosetta, the protagonist Rosetta lives at the marginal of France. The film uses realism cinematic style through semi-documentary, non-diegetic sound throughout the film. Many shot aim to intimate the perspective of Rosetta with first person angel, if the film is target to working class, it is not necessary to intimate the view of Rosetta, but it use this way to testify the knowledge of middle class that not familiar to the world of her. Some critics interpret Rosetta as a warrior film, Rosetta try to protect her own land, at the sequence where she stay at her friend house and on the bed, she talks to herself ‘me name is Rosetta, you found a job, you’ve got a friend, you have a normal life, you won’t fall in the rut.’ She tries to convince herself and to sustain what she got. The journey she has to travel between she ‘home’ to the city is fill with obstacles, the camera constant show her journey. Her journey of changing her shoes/boots in the abandon grassland before her travel, her crossing land to fish at the park. The film tries to show the struggle for a marginalise characters to fight for her social identities through the travel of spaces; all she does throughout the film is to fight for the basic for urban people do. Therefore, this film is about the social difference or mainly the difference of a working class female to the rest of the world. Moreover, as Rosetta mainly exhibit in the art house circuit, it is most like middle class will watch it than working class (evident).
Section 2: In Hidden, this film in contrast to Rosetta, changes the perspective to a middle class family, the reverse of the angel. It is about a middle class family, the threat (spying video) that they face is actually not harming them but mentally. But the protagonists (Georges and Anne) describe it as ‘terrorist’. Their own land, the house is constantly being spying and record from the outside. They terrify is due to the uncertain attack to their space. In contrast to Rosetta, George has a proper house, a nice job. Yet his goal is try to protect it from the outside threat. The character Majid (arguably is working class) who Georges suspect is lived at the margin, the journey of Georges finds Majid’s house is depicted, the differences of environment, the concentrate of houses. On the other hand, Majid’s son also has to travel across to find Georges office. The film use many still camera, smooth camera movement, compare to Rosetta, a sense of observing the middle class family with distance. Although it may argue the social class difference and diffusion within this film can also embodies as an ethnical difference, but the centre of this discussion is the use of concept of space to address the social difference. Therefore this discuss won’t go too far by talking the ethical problems.
Evaluation/ Conclusion: How the way space is presented to emphasis the social difference, the similarity of both film address the issue of social class different and to depict the characters’ journey through the contrast of space. But what the differences are their different distinctive uses of cinematic elements. Their cinematic elements associate the different perspective of different social class of the characters. The conclusion aims to show the contrast between these two films and to sum up how space is organised differently in these two films, more essentially, how space operated in these two films. Rosetta is through the perspective of a working class female who marginalise in society, Hidden through a middle class family. Both films depict from different perspective to emphases the social different through the concept of space. How both films challenge the social difference in French.
