Power, Relationships, and Influence

This essay is worth 100 points or 10% of your final grade.
Objective:
• To demonstrate your understanding of key power and relationship principles.
• To reinforce the class concepts and to demonstrate your ability to utilize your newly acquired knowledge to systematically evaluate real life situations.

Task:
Use leader-follower relationship concepts to systematically evaluate your relationship with your followers. Specifically, think about a time when you were in a leadership position and when you had to influence others. For example, you can talk about a situation that happened in school (e.g., group project, school event) or outside of school (e.g., summer jobs, internships, volunteer work). Write an essay that addresses and evaluates your relationship with your followers and your source of power. Please arrange your paper in this way:
• Context. Briefly describe the context of your specific problem. Make sure you briefly (i.e., one sentence for each question) address the following questions: What was the setting – school, work? Who was involved? What was your main task? What was your goal? Who were your followers? How many followers did you have? In other words, tell me only what I need to know in order to understand your write-up. (10 points)
• Symptoms and Analysis. What was your relationship with your followers like? Specifically, use class concepts (LMX and others that fit your analysis) in order to address the following questions: How did you develop that specific relationship (e.g., if it was good, why was it good? If it was bad and weak, why was it weak)? Why did they follow you? What was the quality of your relationship with your followers? Make sure you explain this relationship. What were the sources of your power (according to French & Raven) over your followers? Make sure you explain and support your claims and make sure you provide specific examples (i.e., symptoms) of varying relationship qualities. (70 points)
• Conclusion. Were you successful in influencing and leading your followers? If so, why were you successful? If you were not successful in leading others, why were you not successful? Make sure you address how your success was measured. (20 points)
