Weighting 40%
Total Marks 100 marks
Context:
The assessment is prescribed to advance the skills of student’s user experience (UX)
understanding and analysis. The assessment requires students to produce a robust proposal
to re-develop a local brand’s current website to enhance the UX.
The assessments key understanding is to allow students to better understand UX design.
This skill for a designer is essentially acting as the bridge between client and audience. It
requires a solid understanding of the client’s product and limitations and the target
audience including their psychology and behaviours, along with their method of
engagement (the hardware/software).
The assessment will improve student’s analysis and recognition of typical UX flaws and
improvements. It will also improve students’ the ability to identify target audiences by
creating persona stories and to engage in the analysis of user behaviours, a skill that is
transdisciplinary. It will prepare students for an increasingly required skill set (UX design),
which is also fast becoming a career option for designers.

Instructions:
Requirements:
Students will be required to produce a design proposal to re-develop a local brand’s current
website. The re-design aims to enhance the UX, functionality and aesthetic appeal in order
to increase digital sales or increase customer traffic to the physical store.
Preparation:
Students will need to investigate the methodology, techniques and practices of a UX
designer. Students will also need to investigate and analyse the brand and their digital
collateral. The methodology of UX designers and example brand discussions and user
psychology analysis will be available via video tutorials created by the University and
conducted in class demonstrations and discussions. Support material and external learning
resources will be provided on Blackboard in each module.
Submission items:
Students will create a PDF document in InDesign that outlines preliminary UX research
conducted on a local brand. Students will engage in the analysis, design, prototype stages
of enquiry required to conduct UX research. Students should present a clear summary of
their findings in a professional document. Students will not have a large group of users to
test with, and so the emphasis is on their analytic thought processes. Students should
unpack the brand with its nuances and provide current and sophisticated digital design
solutions to the problems identified.
The design proposal and research document will include sections on:
1. Brand analysis (SWOT analysis)
2. Real-world UX behaviour analysis of a user on the brands current home page
3. Persona creation and user experience goals
4. User journey map
5. Wireframe development for Home page
6. Prototype testing results (paper or digital prototypes)
Students should conduct their research in the order above, as there is a logical flow
between the different sections with previous sections informing the future.
UX component:
Students will need to conduct a real world behavioural analysis with a potential customer of
the brand, by implementing a UX strategy outlined in the lecture notes. Students will need
to source their own potential customer of a brand either through their friends, family or
online. The process of behaviour analysis is documented in lecture notes. This should
simply include subtle details about how the user has engaged with the website after being
DIG103_Assessment_1_Brief_T1_2017.Docx.docx Page 3 of 5
given a task by the UX designer. Notes should be made on the problem areas identified, and
how easily it was to achieve.
Format and submission requirements:
Students are to use bullet points predominantly, and sparingly descriptive passages. The
document itself should be neatly organised and clearly presented, with graphics created and
screenshots taken to illustrate their research and proposal for their digital solution to the
problems identified.
Students will create and submit a 12 page PDF document. Each submission item will require
1 x page of 6-8 bullet points and 1 x page of 1-2 images per. No images should be sourced
all images should be created by the student.
Any references must conform to the APA reference style in accordance with the Universities
policy.
Evaluation criteria:
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
1. Identify digital user experience problems and issues of a brand
2. Solve user experience problems creatively using currently available digital solutions
3. Conduct real world research in the UX field
4. Create graphics and organise imagery to illustrate a clear and cohesive digital
solution and deliver a high quality document
