Read Rite of Passage by Richard Wright, The Tent by Gary Paulsen, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros and Bless Me Ultima by Anaya. Pick two of the texts

in this module and write 1 lesson plan for each of your two chosen books with a 2- 3 page reflection paper about ways that your students might connect to these texts

through the characters,setting or other literary device. In other words, justify your choice of learning activities for your lesson plans. Learning activities can

include a student writing assignments, oral presentations or other activities. Include ways that you will assess student work and understanding as encouraged by your

learning activities.
Here is an example you can use if you choose to compare The Rite of Passage and the House on Mango Street. You may use this exact writing but you must add to it.
The Rite of Passage by Richard Wright was a phenomenal read. I would definitely implement this reading in my classroom because it will motivate a positive

discussion based on the ties of academic achievement and family support. The character Johnny portrayed a bright, loving and happy adolescent. Who loved his family,

loved achieving in school and got along well with his peers and teachers. His life changed drastically after being told at age fifteen that the life he knew was a lie

because he was a foster child and he was being placed in a different home after all these years. He never knew. This devastated and changed his life toward

destruction.
In comparison to the House of Mango Street written by Sandra Cisneros, this book gave a perspective coming from a poor Hispanic adolescent female. Her dreams of

owning a beautiful home of her own someday seemed to be her most important fantasy. Esperanza was poor and due to poverty she was not able to dress nice like her

peers. Her embarrassment of not having the right attire kept her unfocused on the importance of school. Even her mother warned her about making the same mistake she

had by dropping out of school because she was ashamed of her clothing. Esperanza hated the fact she lived on Mango Street and wanted to flee. Eventually, she learned

to accept her roots and realized that although she grew up on Mango Street, her upbringing does not define who she is.
These two books are excellent reads to discuss in the classroom because it gives two perspectives, a male and a female adolescent perspective. Not to say all males

and females can be characterized in the same light, but speaking from my own personal adolescence; being a female and all appearance was one of my main concerns as

well and hair and clothing was at the top pf

my list. I would use this lesson and have students share their personal opinion on what is important to them.
