We Are the World
It’s Time to Make a Difference BUSI 24 Term Project

Scenario:
Your CEO of a small to mid-sized firm has asked you and several others in middle management to propose a company sponsored socially responsible activity that will make a difference in your community, state, country or world. She has appropriated a budget of $50,000 this year for this purpose with the only stipulation that this investment brings lasting change, involves company employees, and leverages the resources of the company and/or agencies involved. In other words- has an impact that is well over the $50,000 investment. Your job is to come up with a proposal that you feel will meet this objective and truly make a difference.

Project Requirements:

  • You have an option of defining a company by what they make or the services they provide (for the purpose of strategic philanthropy). You may, however, just describe an activity that any company can address.

  • You may also partner with an agency that is already working on a project of interest showing how your support would enhance their efforts.

  • Note that you need to get involved, not just write a check

  • Develop a 5-page proposal to include: o Title Page – Include title, course name, your name, and date on title page. The title page is not included as part of your page count.

  1. Introduction– Explain the parameters of your proposal to include the type of company you selected if necessary, the agency involved if selecting a partner, and the country and the issue addressed. (This should be researched and resources used in the introduction.)
  2. Description of Need– Justify why this is needed by the population served or initiative addressed. (Again, this should be researched, based on facts and not antidotal information.)
  3. Description of Proposed Activity – Explain what you feel would be a good socially responsible investment for your company, how it would be accomplished, and how the company would be involved.
  4. Proposed Accomplishments – Explain how this activity helps the broader community – now and in the future.  Show how it will make a difference now and in the future.
  5. References – Include citations of references used within your paper.  Use APA or MLA style.  The reference page is not part of the page count for this paper.

NOTE:  Use Introduction, Description of Need, Description of Proposed Activity, Proposed Accomplishments, and References as subtitles within your paper.

Grading (100 points):
· Quality and Creativity of Proposal (65 points)

  1. Will it really make a difference?
  2. Will it leverage resources of those involved?
  3. What benefits will be gained now and in the future for society and for the company?
  4. Is this a novel idea or much of the same thing?

  • Mechanics – Spelling, Grammar, and Inclusion of all subheadings provided, paper double spaced using 12 pt. font, adhering to page limits (10 points)

  • Following directions regarding format, purpose, and content of the proposal – (15 points)

  • Resources – Is the proposal supported by solid research findings?  Resources should be integrated within the text and referenced at the end of the proposal using APA or MLA styles – (10 points)

Some Ideas:
There are many ways companies can contribute in lesser developed countries.  Here are some ideas to get you thinking of what can be done. . . .(Help with development of infrastructure, sanitation, hunger, education/literacy, shelter, medical, entrepreneurial development, etc.)  Again, remember, that simply “writing a check” is not acceptable. The entire investment must go completely toward the project and not your company.  You and your employees must get involved!  Here is a list of developing countries:  http://www.ams.org/membership/individual/types/mem-develop

Remember that this is a research paper that should be based on facts and referenced.
