+1 862 207 3288 In some plants, the adventitious aerial roots arising from the stem, elongate and form root system in the soil. Such roots are strong and render mechanical support to the plants. In banyan, the branches arising from the main trunk and its branches give rise to adventitious roots which elongated vertically downward and enter soil. They form root system in the soil. The aerial part of these roots increases in girth and becomes strong and stumpy like a pillar. Hence they are called columnar roots, which render support to the horizontal branches. e.g. The giant banyan tree in the Indian Botanical Garden, Calcutta and Kabirvad in Shukaltirth near Bharuch are some of the very famous banyan trees in India. The maize is a monocot plant having long and slender stem. Several adventitious roots arise from the lowermost nodes which run obliquely downward and produce fibrous root system in the soil. These roots, known as prop or tilt roots, render additional support to the plant and prevent it from being uprooted. The screwpine Pandanus also possesses prop roots.
