Terminology

System: Any specified portion of matter under study which is separated from the rest of universe with a bounding surface.
Surroundings: The rest of the universe which might be in a position to exchange energy and matter
Open System: Exchange of both matter and energy is possible
Isolated System: No exchange of matter and energy
Closed System: No exchange of matter but exchange of energy
