Background

In order to graduate from the United Nation list of least developed countries in 2020 (UNDP, n.d.), one of the national economic reform strategies is amending renewed focus on special economic zones through out the country (Lao National Assembly, 2011). This will define boosting development, attracting investment, improving infrastructure and delivering employment for local people (EIU ViewsWire, 2012).

Lessoned learn and passed experiences from neighbouring countries have shown that SEZs contribute to the growth of economic development and increase FDI by providing lessened government market controls (Boonlua et al., 2012; EIU ViewsWire, 2012; Wang, 2013). However, despite of great benefits, there is no research indicated that the impact of FDI to the Savanh-Seno Special Economic Zone since its adopting this policy.

Aim and Objectives

This research will aim to identify the determinants for FDI and participation strategies used by foreign investors, and the challenges they encounter in Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone (SSEZ).

The developing objectives are defined as to:
1. Review theories underpinning special economic zones and relevant theories which can inform the need of conducting additional research of the exploratory nature.
2. Identify the motives, strategies and modes of entering of foreign investors in the SSEZ, the barriers they encounter at the early stage of establishing their business through primary research;
3. identify the motives, strategies and barriers at present though primary research;
4. Make conclusions about the development of investment climate in SSEZ;
5. Make academic and commercial recommendations to providing a critical assessment for companies seeking to enter the SSEZ in the future.
Methodological Approach

The qualitative method of this project will be used, specifically semi-structured interviews. The open-ended questions will be appropriate formed and asked various companies invested within SSEZ. The gathered data will be analysed using Nvivo program and other qualitative analysis related techniques.
