Paper instructions:
Read an article written by members from a group called, Lifers in a Pennsylvania State Prison that was published in The Prison Journal in 2004. The article is titled, Ending the Culture of Street CrimePreview the documentView in a new window.
This group of Lifers who authored the article along with several academics, are seeking to stop the violence for their own families (children with an incarcerated parent have a higher risk of ending up in prison) as well as all families. They have developed a theory and now need to know where to go from here. I met with this group of Lifers at the prison in June 2005 along with other colleagues. We discussed what they have written to date, as they are planning a follow-up article.
After reading the article, respond to these questions.
How can a group of inmates, especially those who are Lifers, contribute to making a difference in society while behind bars?
Do you agree with the theory that the authors have presented, “Transformation Model?”
How might the Lifers be able to test their theory because obviously they are not able to be released. Note that a life sentence in Pennsylvania means life. They want to pursue the theory and prove that it can be effective. How would you advise them if you were on a committee with other academics and professionals to assist this group?
