Playing Sherlock Holmes:
The emotive motive

For this writing exercise, you will choose one of the following mysteries. You will then write a 300-500

word story that develops the motives and characters of the people involved in the crime. You may

invent as many characters as you’d like. Pathos is your main concern here—what are the emotional

reasons for these inexplicable crimes? Try to write your story in a way that would invoke emotion for

your reader. This does not need to address your TAP topic. Have fun!

OPTION ONE:

Investigators from two police agencies have not yet been able to identify the thieves who stole $60,000

worth of frozen chicken two weeks ago from a plant in Bethlehem and took it to Macon.

“There’s no telling what they were trying to do with the chicken,” Bibb County sheriff’s Lt. Sean Defoe

said Friday.

The trailer was reported stolen on the morning of Jan. 25, but was recovered later that same day where

it had been left parked at a convenience store in Macon, Barrow County sheriff’s Maj. Mike Hamm said

Thursday.

“It’s an open case and we’re still looking at it,” Hamm said.

The thieves entered the complex at Harrison Poultry at about 4:30 a.m. A surveillance video shows at

least two people involved with stealing the refrigerated trailer
valued at $30,000, according to sheriff’s reports.

The thieves apparently examined the contents of a second trailer because a plastic seal on the trailer

was broken, an employee told deputies at the time. The thieves took the trailer containing 40,000

pounds of boneless chicken tenders.

The trailer was found shortly after 3 p.m. the same day when a man, who had earlier reported his semi-

truck stolen, found the truck in the store parking lot attached to the stolen Harrison Poultry trailer,

according to Defoe. The truck owner reported that tools, a GPS and stereo were missing from his truck,

Defoe said.

Only a small amount of chicken had been removed from the trailer, David Bleth, vice president of

operations for Harrison Poultry, said Thursday.

“It’s obvious the guys abandoned ship real quick,” Bleth said, adding it appeared to him that “something

must have scared them off.”
“We’re glad to get our trailer back,” he said. “We called in a police report to say something was missing

and by that afternoon we had discovered where it was. Super work by the police on our end and on the

Macon guys’ end. Those guys did a phenomenal job.”
The trailer with its contents was brought back to Bethlehem under the supervision of a U.S. Department

of Agriculture inspector, Bleth said.

The theft of a large amount of chicken has happened before in Georgia.

In January 2013, police reported $65,000 worth of chicken wings were stolen at a chicken plant in

Doraville, according to a news report by Time Newsfeed.

In that case, two men who were employed at the plant were charged with the theft.

The story noted that in January the cost of chicken soars every year to feed hunger Super Bowl fans.

OPTION TWO:

At his farm near Odon, Indiana, William Hackler finished having breakfast with his family and left the

house. On his way to the barn, he smelled smoke. When he hurriedly returned to the house, he discovered

a fire in the upstairs bedroom wall (note the house had no electricity). The local volunteer fire

department was called in and the blaze quickly extinguished. However, that was only the start of the

Hackler family’s day long ordeal.
After the truck left, another fire broke out, this time in a mattress in an upstairs guest room. It seemed

as though the fire had been set from inside the mattress! Throughout the day, more fires broke out all

over the house, some under the gazes of astonished witnesses. By 2:00 p.m., more fire fighters were

called in, and by the end of the day, twenty-eight seemingly spontaneous fires were extinguished,

including one that started between the covers of a book.
The fires ended as mysteriously as they began. Hackler tore down the house and built a new one from

the reclaimed lumber. Neither he nor his family experienced anything like the Odon fire poltergeist

again.
