With reference to the research literature discuss how educators might improve student motivation in the National Disaster Life Support Foundation courses
Outline
• Introduction (300 words)
What the National Disaster Life Support Foundation (NDLSF) courses are (Basic Disaster Life Support, Advanced Disaster Life Support and the National Disaster Life Support-Decontamination course), their importance for everyone including healthcare staff and what the paper will talk about
• Discussion of the current situation in terms of the lack of motivation by the learners for the NDLSF courses, who are healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, paramedics, lab techs, respiratory therapists…etc., in a Middle Eastern hospital. I am the coordinator of these courses and I also teach them. (750 words)
o Evidence includes
? Their low level of preparedness and behaviour during the courses (not reading textbooks despite having it about a month ahead of the course date, lack of interaction in the lectures, not taking the skills stations seriously, it’s basically kind of a day off for most of them)
? Their behaviour and performance during the disaster drills held internally in the hospital or externally as part of larger scale disaster drills (performance errors are repeated despite the training)
o Possible reasons for lack of motivation that are related to learners are the following:
? Disasters are fortunately uncommon so they think what are the chances that it happens
? I think the previous point, to a large extent, is related to culture (possibly religion too) with the belief that everything is in god’s hands and that with his will, it won’t happen! The context is in a Middle Eastern country.
? They are more concerned and busy with their daily patient care tasks so that learning about disaster management (something that might not happen in their entire career) becomes of least importance and priority
? The medical field requires constant knowledge and skills refreshing and updating and so the motivation to do so constantly surpasses the motivation to learn something that will be of not much (if any) use
? Those who have experienced participating in real disasters of any scale do understand the value of and appreciate these courses and clearly behave differently than those who haven’t
o Possible reasons for lack of motivation that are related to the course itself are the following:
? The NDLSF courses have no examinations where learners can pass or fail
? Videos are not commonly used to make the learners more engaged
? The hands on skills station of the Advanced Disaster Life Support course are not realistic enough to make the learners experience a disaster situation vicariously
? Hospital emergency response policies don’t reflect training principles entirely and clearly
• Discussion of motivational principles that could explain the motivation problem in hand including extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and an explaining of surface and deep learning and how they relate to extrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Also, discuss the theory of possible selves. Please relate all of this discussion to the context of this paper and give examples using the first person I (2000 words)
o With regard to the theory of possible selves, discuss how it may not apply in this context and the possibility that course content and teaching methods are not conducive to achieve what this theory suggests
o Link extrinsic and intrinsic motivation to surface and deep learning and you can represent that as a continuum from extrinsic to intrinsic according to internal and external factors
• Application of those motivational principles to increase the learners’ level of motivation through course modification strategies. Finally, discuss the link between those teaching strategies and surface and deep learning (1500 words)
o Show more videos to increase the level of vicarious experience
o Apply high fidelity simulation
o Bring in someone who was involved in a real disaster situation to share their experience with the learners
o As possible, use of disaster reports (also called after action reviews)
o To match the training objectives with the disaster management policies to improve disaster drill performance and outcome
• Conclusion (300 words)
o Summary of the points discussed
I will attach a few documents to be used as main resources for this paper. Please use the reference lists in those papers for more resources as I need 35-40 resources. For referencing, only the titles are italic. Please provide hyperlinks to references. For basic information about the NDLSF courses, please visit their website or you can search the web. Please use these headings (introduction, the current situation, motivational principles, application of motivational principles, conclusion).
