American Popular Culture of Violence in American Cinema
Paper instructions:
Can you rewrite my response paper? I only got 6/10 of this paper. My professor said “You need to utilize more specific examples. You make a lot of general statements that are not supported
with evidence. Plus, you did not discuss a significant factor in pre-1967 screen violence – the Production Code Adminstration and its effects on screen content.”
My class is about American Popular Culture of Violence in American Cinema. For this response discuss the significance of the year 1967 in regard to the representation of screen violence. What
were depictions of violence like in American film after that date and how did these depecitions differ from what was represented on American movie screen prior to that date. Be sure to
reference readings and significant films in your response.
Readings:
1) James Kendrick. Film Violence: History, Ideology, Genre Wallflower Press, 2009. Page 1-62
2) Stephen Prince (ed.) Screening Violence. Rutgers University Press, 2000. Page 1-61
3) The Motion Picture Production Code
Screening in class: Natural Born Killers (Oliver Stone, 1994), Frankenstein (James Whale, 1931)
Film Clips: Early cinematic violence; Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932)
Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn, 1967
The response papers will be based on a prompt that will be provided at the beginning of the week. Your response to the prompt will engage with the readings, screenings, and class discussion
for that week. Some response prompts may require a bit more creativity on you part. Read the prompt and make sure that you understand what is being asked of you. The response papers
should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, one-inch margins. The standard five-paragraph essay structure should be utilized for your response papers. No citations are necessary, but if
you do quote material from the readings, it will need some source identification in text (i.e., “According to James Kendrick….”) Think of the response papers as a way to critically engage with the
material that is suggested by the prompt – if you engage with the material and concepts you should do fine. Also, proofread, proofread, proofread! One thing that I cannot abide is the
misspelling of proper names. Titles of films are italicized (i.e. Pulp Fiction).
